Free Product Datasheets for the UK IT Channel for more than 35 Top IT Brands like HP, Acer, Toshiba and Fujitsu-Siemens, introduced by Open Icecat.

Tuesday, April 19, 2006, www.icecat.co.uk: Open Icecat provides for more than 35 top IT brands, the datasheets for free to the UK IT Channel. See the list of Open Icecat partners: http://icecat.biz/menu/partners/index.html . The first three UK resellers have passed a pilot phase with the Open Icecat data. The typical internet concept has already proven itself in the Benelux countries, and Germany, where today some 300 resellers and distributors make use of the shared product database. A similar success and penetration is expected in the UK. Logical, as many channel partners are struggling with lower and lower margins, and prefer to invest their margin in marketing & sales, not in content.

The vendor partners of Open Icecat include all major IT brands, such as HP, Acer, Fujitsu-Siemens, Lenovo, IBM, Toshiba, Canon, Sony and a score of “smaller” brands. Partnerships with these brands are established on various levels (worldwide, EMEA, local) to take care of a good coverage of local product content. The focus of Open Icecat will be on further expanding the number of vendor partners, optimizing local coverage, and increasing the user base.

Icecat itself is not limited to these 35 brands, but support all 100s of IT, Telecom, Office and Consumer Electronics brands, offered in a paid subscription. However, it is expected that this paid subscription will eventually disappear, as manufacturers understand that product information has to be provided for free.

About Open Icecat
Icecat.biz is developed in 2003 and has developed rapidly from a local Dutch IT products database, into multilingual European Open Icecat. Open Icecat started formally in December, 2005 with 20 launching manufacturers. This number has almost doubled since. The main motivation of manufacturers and the channel to join this concept is to drive channel costs down, and to improve the standardization and quality of product content. Open Icecat is ruled by the Open Content License Agreement. Icecat.biz is providing product content in XML format or via URLs. The content is used in webshops, comparison sites, advisors and ERP systems.
