Los gatos son uno de los más antiguos amigos del hombre conocidos. Las crías de gato pasan la mayor parte del tiempo durmiendo y jugando. Además, pueden estar horas y horas corriendo detrás de un ovillo de lana.
La relación de los gatos con el hombre viene de lejos. Desde hace varios siglos son sus fieles compañeros. Normalmente suelen pesar entre 2,5 y 7 kilos y medir casi 30 centímetros de alto y 50 centímetros de largo. Los dientes, la lengua y las orejas de los gatos son muy especiales y pueden expresar su estado de ánimo mediante el lenguaje corporal. Su dentadura es la de un carnívoro. Su lengua está provista de pequeñas espinas que les ayudan a cuidar su pelaje y a distribuir su propio olor. Las orejas pueden percibir sonidos muy agudos. Los gatos tienen unos órganos sensoriales más sensibles que los del hombre y duermen más para ahorrar energía.
